The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) visa is a digital travel permit introduced to streamline entry processes and enhance border security.  The Travel Authorization is now required if you meet the requirements.

What is the UK ETA Visa?

The ETA is not a visa but a digital authorization that allows eligible travelers to visit the UK for short stays. It is electronically linked to the applicant's passport and is required for those who do not need a visa for short-term visits. Your ETA lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. You can travel to the UK as many times as you want while you have an ETA.

Who Needs an ETA?

Travelers from visa-free countries, such as the USA, Canada, and Australia, need an ETA for tourism, business, or transit purposes. However, UK and Irish citizens, as well as individuals with valid UK visas or residence permits, are exempt.

Application Process

  1. Documents Required: A valid passport, personal details, and travel itinerary.
  2. How to Apply: Applications can be submitted via the UK ETA app or the official government website.
  3. Cost: The fee is £10, increasing to £16 from April 9, 2025.
  4. Approval Time: Decisions are typically made within minutes but may take up to three working days.

Benefits and Limitations

  • Benefits: Simplifies entry, reduces paperwork, and enhances security.
  • Limitations: Does not permit long-term stays, work, or claiming public funds.

This system aims to modernize border control while ensuring a smooth travel experience for eligible visitors.
